Common Core

Pacific Beach Middle International Baccalaureate World School has started implementing new national Common Core Standards. Over the next two years, our IB units will be redesigned with a shift from the California State Standards toward the Common Core Standards.
Reflecting our IB framework of education, we welcome the shift that will usher in a state-wide focus that will strengthen reading, writing, speaking and listening throughout the curriculum including physical education, science, and technical subjects. "We are so pleased that many of our states have finally embraced a higher-level of standards that reflect skills that we need to solve 21st C. problems. In 2011 the IB was selected 'as one of 5 sets of standards against which the new U.S. Common Core was measured by education experts to determine its success in meeting its goals [IBO, 2012].' This is who we are...this way of teaching, this way of questioning, designing unit scenario and problem-based assessments, leading students to develop arguments and supporting claims with evidence, is not new to us. We are already trained in these approaches to teaching and learning. We are thankful that we are ahead of the curve and that our work may serve as a model for others, " according to Jennifer Sims, (IB, Service-Learning, and Partnerships Coordinator) at PB Middle.

Through IB our highly trained educators are taught to design curriculum that is relevant and inquiry-based and that engages learners in real-life, authentic assessment tasks and learning experiences. IB educators already hold the belief that all teachers are teachers of language. We believe, and our IB curriculum units reflect, a commitment to developing communication, research through information and media literacy, and thinking skills in every classroom, in the library, on the field, and throughout our online environments. We aim to develop critical and creative thinkers who not only understand their role in the world, but who can apply their learning to take personal action in their own lives and engage in service-learning at school, at home and in their communities. These skills, along with the content knowledge, and repeated experience of grappling with real-life scenarios, will prepare students for the IB Diploma Programme coursework, college, and for the many personal, social and career opportunities and choices that they will encounter.

The Common Core Standards align with the goals, practices and standards set-forth by the International Baccalaureate Framework of International Education and the IB Middle Years Programme objectives that our students learn and apply in the classroom and beyond. Over the next two years we will be creating documents that help to explain this transition to parents and students. For two years, the state of California has chosen to suspend the state testing during this implementation phase for ll areas except Science.
